I google searched ‘What is the point of a blog?’ and got this answer:
The purpose of writing blogs could be promotion of a product or service, awareness about social issues, information sharing about any subject or purely passion for writing.“

In this particular case I am writing this blog to share information.
The information I want to share with you today is how to get a little bit more out of your bible reading.
I have implemented this in my bible reading and it has really made it come alive.  So, you are going to need your bible and a pen (3 different colored pens would be ideal.)
Here we go:

  1. Pray! Pray for wisdom and the mind of Christ.  Pray that you would understand and apply what you read.
  2. Read a portion of scripture.  -Out loud so you can hear yourself say it.  If you are new to reading the bible start in one gospels-  Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. Today we are going to be reading John 3:16-21.  Go ahead and read that now.
  3. Underline: Now go ahead and read it again, but this time look for anything that has to do with God. Underline anytime His name is used, or pronouns referring to Him. ie “He” or “His”
  4. Circle: Now go ahead and read it again! But this time you will be looking for statements that tell how a Christian should live their life.  Go ahead and circle them. (Key words to look for are “should” and “do”.)
  5. Bracket: Now go ahead and read it a 4th time. This time you will be looking for statements that tell how a Christian should not live their life.  When you do go ahead and put [brackets] around it. (Key words to look for are “shouldn’t” and “don’t”.)

You have just read the same passage of scripture 4 times.  By bracketing, circling, and underlining you have involved 3 different senses: Sight, Hearing, and touch.  All of this to help you get connected with the Word of God.

The aim of reading the Bible isn’t to just check it off your list of things you got done that day.  The goal is that the Bible will actually start reading you back.  That is the ultimate goal.  In Hebrews 4:12 it says, 12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. When we read the Bible we will get a better understanding of who God is and how he works but also who we are and how God made us.
