1. Filling in the Story
    1. Joseph (a type of Christ) was sold into slavery in Egypt
    2. He is put in charge of Potipher’s household
    3. Potipher’s wife makes sexual advances toward Joseph
    4. Joseph runs away and the wife accuses him
    5. Joseph is thrown into the king’s prison. (Genesis 39: 20)
    6. God granted him favor in the prison (Vs 21)
      1. God’s favor and our favor are not. Always the same thing.
      2. Mary was highly favored Luke 1: 28
      3. We are living in the favor of the Lord. Isaiah 40: 3 – 5, Luke 3: 4 – 6
      4. Favor = working salvation through
    7. Two of the kings servants fall into disfavor with pharaoh and are thrown in prison
    8. They have two dreams
      1. Cupbearer would be restored after three days (symbol of Messiah is wine flowing like a river after three days)
      2. Baker would be hung (after three days anyone else hung on a tree)
      3. Both symbols of Messiah, the suffering Messiah and the victorious Messiah
    9. Now we are two years later.
    10. Joseph had his dreams when he was 17 years old.
      1. Waiting on fulfillment is hard, but when he reached 30, he saw the fulfillment of these dreams begging to take place.
  2. The End Genesis 41: 1
    1. There was a fixed end to what was happening in Joseph’s life
      1. This corresponds to the final redemption which will also come at the appointed time ‘which the Father has fixed by His own authority Acts 1: 7
      2. Joseph represents the people of God
      3. Prison represents slavery in this world.
      4. The end is the time when God will bring his people out and bring them to the place he has established for them.
        1. Satan bound with chains Revelation 20: 2
        2. Divine revelation will flood the earth Isaiah 11: 9
        3. Death swallowed up for all time and removal of reproach from people Isaiah 25: 8
      5. Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s Dream
        1. Seven years of good followed by seven years of bad
  3. Seven
    1. Seven is important in the Bible
    2. Seven days of creation
    3. Seventh year being a sabbath year
    4. Daniel counts off years in sevens or weeks
    5. Seven years of a tribulations followed by Messiah reigning
    6. Important in this story, God is going to use the seven years to bring reunification between Israel and his son.
      1. Just as Joseph was cast away from the promised land, Israel has been scattered.  Now because of a dream of Pharaoh, a reunification is taking place.
  4. Joseph exalted 
    1. They hurriedly brought Joseph out 41: 14
      1. Joseph’s prison life was changed hurriedly (in a twinkling)
      2. I the Lord will hasten it in its time. Isaiah 60: 22
      3. For My salvation is about to come and My righteousness to be revealed Isaiah 56: 1
    2. The Spirit of God 41: 39
      1. The Spirit of God imparts wisdom and insight in how to deal with the life situations that are around us.
        1. This is the same spirit that hovered over the waters at creation
        2. This is the same spirit that fills us today.
    3. You will be second only to me Vs 40
      1. In the kingdom of God, what goes down will eventually come up
      2. Jesus humbled himself and took on the form of a servant. Philippians 2: 9
      3. God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name Vs 9
      4. The chariot = Throne of God a chariot with wheels Ezekie
      5. Runners yelling bow the knee Vs 43 = Jesus every knee will bow Philippians 2: 10
      6. Authority over household Vs 40 = Lord placed his son over the house of God. Hebrews 3: 6
      7. Everything under your feet but Pharaoh Vs 40 = All things under his feet but God himself 1Corinthians 15: 27
      8. Joseph marries Asenath 41: 45
        1. This is a type of the Gentiles being grafted into the kingdom of God.
        2. They have two children Ephraim and Manasseh
          1. Manasseh = God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household
          2. Ephraim means double fruitful = God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction (favor)
  5. Jacob is going to bless these children but he is going to reverse the order of them
    1. Ephraim will be more powerful
    2. Jeroboam is from the tribe of Ephraim.
